International Cittaslow started with the slow food movement. In 1986, Carlo Petrini, an Italian journalist known for his activism, was strolling through Rome's Piazza di Spagna when he was so disgusted by the smell of French fries emanating from a nearby McDonald's that Carlo decided to launch a movement called slow food. The campaign calls for a return to healthy, nutritious locally grown, locally cooked food, and calls on people to "not forget to enjoy local cuisine even during the busiest times."
In October 1999, four Italian mayors of Bra, Greve in Chianti, Positano, Chiavenna, jointly issued the famous the Cittaslow movement charter, proposed one kind of the urban morphology of slowing down. Italy Orvieto becomes the world's first "Cittaslow ". A Cittaslow can be a town, a village or community with a population of less than 50,000. It is anti-pollution, anti-noise, and supports urban greening, green energy and traditional handicraft industries. There are no fast food areas or large supermarkets in Cittaslow areas.
Cittaslow is a new mode of urban development. It emphasizes that in a modern city, we should seek a way to combine modern technology with traditional lifestyle, so that people can not only enjoy the convenience brought by modern life, but also bring a regular and healthy happy life to everyone. Up to June 2020, a total of 266 cities in 30 countries and territorial areas have been awarded the title of "International Cittaslow ".

The logo of Cittaslow is "an orange snail wearing a crown of modern and historic buildings", and the name "Cittaslow" cannot be translated into any other language and is an inherent part of the logo.
